About The Safe Sister’s Circle

The Safe Sisters Circle is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free culturally specific, holistic, and trauma-based services to Black women survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault primarily living in Washington, DC's Wards 7 and 8.

Position Description

The Safe Sisters Circle is currently seeking a creative and outgoing intern to work with The Safe Sisters Circle on our fundraising and development efforts. The internship spans a range of responsibilities in the Development department including managing and cultivating relationships with donors, maintaining records, contributing to research projects, and attending community and donor events and webinars. This will be a great way for people interested in social and racial justice and nonprofit work to see firsthand and learn more about the art and science of philanthropy. 

The internship will begin January 2025 and will be a year-long internship. Interns should be able to commit a minimum of 10-12 hours per week. We are flexible on dates and times that are worked. The position will be remote-first, but interns should be able to attend in-person opportunities in Washington DC and the surrounding metro area with appropriate notice. Internships are unpaid; however, The Safe Sisters Circle may be able to assist you in obtaining academic credit if provided with the required documents. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis

This position will work directly with and report to the Executive Director of The Safe Sisters Circle.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and update donor data and information using the our donor database platform;

  • Conduct research on potential donors/strategic partners, markets, and trends;

  • Send thank yous, receipts and other donor notes;

  • Assist with creating and developing social media campaigns and stewardship engagement;

  • Assist with mailings, filing, and special projects as needed;

  • Participate in the organization’s community outreach efforts in Washington, DC’s Wards 7 and 8; and

  • Other tasks may be assigned.

    • Excellent interpersonal skills;

    • Strong communication skills (written and verbal);

    • Strong writing and research skills;

    • Creative and willing to bring innovative or unique ideas;

    • Detail-oriented and accurate; 

    • Dependable and have the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines;

    • Able to work independently and provide effective follow up;

    • Tech savvy or able to pick up on various online and tech systems quickly (i.e. CRM database; Microsoft Office; Canva; etc.);

    • Able to take direction and accept constructive feedback;

    • Demonstrated commitment to women’s issues, gender-based violence, and/or intimate partner abuse; and

    • Commitment to the mission, vision and values of The Safe Sisters Circle.

Education & Experience:

Enrollment in an accredited college or university or recent graduate. Open to undergraduate and graduate level students regardless of major/field of study with relevant experience or interest in racial justice, gender-based violence support, and/or community nonprofits.
